THE EXEMPLARY LIFE OF BARNABAS

Sunday 20^th September, 2015.

“And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord”               (Acts 11:21-24).

Barnabas was a man of exemplary character which we should emulate as Christians, but a lot of us do not notice this.  There are many lessons we need to learn from this man of God.  His name appeared thirty four times in four books of the New Testament, namely: Acts, 1 Corinthians, Galatians and Colossians, 29 times in acts, 1 in 1Corinthians, 3 in Galatians and 1 in Colossians.

First, his name Barnabas means the son of consolation (Acts 4:36).  It is good for a Christian to be a person of consolation who would be able to bring peace and comfort to a place where there are division and rancour. 

Secondly, he was a generous man to the work of God and the need of the brethren.  He sold his land and brought the proceeds to the apostles’ feet (Acts 4:37).  Every child of God should be generous to the work of God and the need of the church.  You should emulate this as a child of God.

Thirdly, he had some moral and spiritual qualities mentioned in Acts 11:24 (a) he was a good man, the Bible says: “A good name is better than great riches…”; (b) He was full of the Holy Ghost, (c) He was also full of faith.  Every seasoned and heaven-bound child of God should possess the three.  Barnabas was a good counselor and encourager.  When he got to Antioch, he exhorted the brethren “that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord”; The Christian race should be run with purpose of heart without which one will want to retreat and fall back.  You will not fall back in Jesus name.

Fourthly, he was accommodating; when Saul (later called Paul) was converted and wanted to join the disciples in Jerusalem, the disciples feared him and were not ready to admit him into the fellowship. “But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus (Acts 9:27).  Christians should be willing to welcome every sinner that has repented and converted into their fellowship. “Wherefore receive one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God” (Rom 15:7).

Fifthly, he was a trustworthy Christian worker; when the brethren contributed relief gifts for the disciples in Jude because of an imminent death, Barnabas was chosen with Saul to deliver the gifts to the brethren, (see Acts 11:30). A Christian must be someone who is faithful and trustworthy.

Sixth, Barnabas was a man ready to be sent to anywhere the Lord wanted him to go – as prophet and missionary.  “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, separate Me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.  And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away (Acts 13:2,3).  We should make ourselves available to God wherever He wants to use us, whether in a city or a village.

Seventh, He was a bold man (Acts 13:46).  A child of God needs to be bold when preaching the gospel.  We do not receive the spirit of fear to fear. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (II Tim 1:7).

Eighth, He suffered persecution (Acts 13:48-52).  Every born again and committed Christian should be ready for persecution. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (II Tim 3:12).  I can still go on and on but the few that I have mentioned are enough to help us emulate this man of God whose life is worthy of emulation.

(b)   Ask God to help you to live a life that will leave a good legacy for others to emulate

(c)    Ask God to strengthen every area of your weak point and thank Him for answered prayers.

LA VIE EXAMPLAIRE DE BARNABAS

≤ La main du Seigneur ẻtait avec eux, et un grand nombre de personnes crurent et se convertirent au Seigneur. Le bruit en parvint aux oreilles des members de l’Eglise de Jẻrusalem, et ils envoyѐrent Barnabas jusqu’à Antioche. Lorsqu’il fut arrivẻ, et qu’il eut vu la grâce de Dieu, il s’en rẻjouit, et il les exhorta tous à rester d’un cœur ferme attachẻs au Seigneur. Car c’ẻtait un homme de bien, plein d’Esprit-Saint et de foi. Et une foule assez nombreuse se joignit au Seigneur≥ (Actes 11:21-24).

Barnabas ẻtait un homme de caractѐre examplaire que nous devons imiter en tant que chrẻtiens, mais beaucoup d’entre nous ne remarquent pas cela. Il y a beaucoup de leҫons à apprendre de cet homme de Dieu. Son non apparaît trente-quatre fois dans quatre livres du Nouveau Testament, nommẻment: Acts des Apôtres, 1 Corinthiens, Galates et Colossiens; 29 fois dans le livre des Actes, une fois dans 1 Corinthiens, 3 fois dans Galates et une fois dans Colossiens.

Premiѐrement, son nom Barnabas veut dire enfant de consolation (Actes 4:36). C’est bon pour un chrẻtien d’être une personne de consolation qui serait capable de rẻtablir la paix et le confort là où il y a la division et la rancœur.

Deuxiѐment, c’ẻtait un homme gẻnẻreux à l’ẻgard de l’œuvre de Dieu et des besoins des frères. Il vendit son champ et apporta l’argent aux pieds des apôtres. (Actes 4:37). Tout enfant de Dieu doit être gẻnẻreux à l’ẻgard de l’œuvre de Dieu et des besoins de l’ẻglise. Tu dois imiter cela en tant qu’enfant de Dieu.

Troisiѐmement, il dẻtient quelques qualitẻs morales et spirituelles telles que mentionnẻes dans Actes 11:24: (a) C’ẻtait un homme de bien. La Bible dit: ≤ Une bonne rẻputation est prẻfẻrable à de grandes richesses ≥. (b) Il ẻtait plein d’Esprit-Saint. (c) Il ẻtait plein de foi. Tout enfant de Dieu experimentẻ et à destination des cieux doit possẻder ces trois qualitẻs. Barnabas ẻtait quelqu’un qui savait bien conseiller et encourager. Dѐs son arrivẻe à Antioche, il exhorta les frères (..). La course chrẻtienne doit être menẻe avec dẻtermination sans laquelle I’on voudra se retirer et finira par chuter. Tu ne chuteras pas au nom de Jẻsus.

Quatriѐmement, il ẻtait accommodant; quand Saul (qui devint ensuite Paul) s’ẻtait converti et voulait se joindre aux disciples à Jẻrusalem, les disciples eurent peur de lui et n’ẻtaient pas prêts à l’accepter au sein de leur communion (…) (Actes 9:27). Les chrẻtiens doivent être dẻsireux d’accueillir tout pẻcheur s’ẻtant repenti et converti dans leur communion. ≤ Accueillez-vous les uns les autres, comme Christ vous a accueillis, pour la gloire de Dieu ≥ (Ro. 15:7).

Cinquiѐmement, il fut un travailleur chrẻtien digne de confiance. Quand les frères avaient contribuẻ du secours à l’endroit des disciples en judẻe en raison de la mort imminente, Barnabas fut choisi avec Saul pour dẻlivrer (prẻsenter) les dons aux frères. (cf. Actes 11:30). Un chrẻtien doit être quelqu’un de fidѐle et digne de confiance.

Sixiѐmement, Barnabas ẻtait un homme prêt à être envoyẻ partout où l’Eternel voulait qu’il aille, comme prophѐte et missionnaire. (…). Nous devons nous rendre disponibles à Dieu chaque fois qu’il dẻsire se servir de nous, que ce soit dans une ville ou un village.

Septiѐmement, C’ẻtait un homme courageux (Actes 13:46). Un enfant de Dieu a besoin d’être courageux quand il s’agit de prêcher l’ẻvangile, Nous n’avons pas recu I’esprit de timiditẻ pour avoir peur, car Dieu ne nous a pas donnẻ l’esprit de timiditẻ mais de force, d’amour et de sagessee. (II Tim 1:7).

Huitiѐmement, il souffra de persẻcution. (Actes 13:48-52). Tout chrẻtien engagẻ et nẻ de nouveau doit être prêt à être persecutẻ. (…) (II Tim 3:12). Je peux continuer davantage mais les quelques points que j’ai mentonnẻs suffisent à nous aider à imiter cet homme de Dieu dont la vie est dige d’imitation.

Axes de priѐre

• Remercie Dieu pour la vie examplaire de Barnabas.
• Demande à Dieu de t’aider à vivre une vie qui te fera laisser un bon hẻritage que les autres pourraient imiter.
• Demande à Dieu de te fortifier dans chaque domaine de tes points faibles et remercie-le pour tes priѐres exaucẻes.
