THE WATCHMAN’S RESPONSIBILITY
“So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul” (Ezek.33:7-9).
In ancient times, people used to have watchmen who would be on the watch for their city in case of any possible attack or invasion from enemies outside. It was the duty of the watchman whenever he saw a pending attack in sight to blow the trumpet or whistle, to alert villagers of the danger. If when he saw the danger afar off, he kept silent without doing anything to warn the people and the enemies came and captured the people the watchman would be guilty of the blood of the people. But if after warning them, they did not wake up for their defence and were then captured, their blood would be on themselves but he would have saved his own life.
That was the metaphor God used to talk to Ezekiel in the preceding verses of the chapter. Having said that, God turned to Ezekiel and told him that He (God) has made Ezekiel a watchman for Israel, that if He said to the wicked that the wicked would die, it was Ezekiel’s responsibility to tell the wicked that what God said would happen to the wicked, and if the wicked failed to repent, his blood would be upon himself but Ezekiel would have saved his life. But if Ezekiel did not do his work to warn the wicked and the wicked died, God would judge Ezekiel for negligence.
All Christians both male and female young and old are the Ezekiel of this age to warn sinners of the impending danger of God’s judgment, on unrepentant sinners of our generation. We are saved to save others.
Every sinner in the presence of God is a wicked person regardless of his/her social status God is no respect of any person who remains in his/her sins and fails to repent. In Ps.9:17 the word of God says, “The wicked shall be turned into hell And all the nations that forget God.” Since we all know this truth that without Christ every man is lost, we as God’s watchmen and women cannot afford to shy away from our responsibility to tell sinners the way of salvation through the gospel which is the power of God to save. Paul was aware of the implications of failing to preach the gospel, he said, “…woe is me if I do not preach the gospel” (1Cor..9:16b).
Paul preached the gospel so much that he said, “how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you publicly and from house to house, testifying to Jesus, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ…Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.” (Acts 20:19, 26).
Let it be known to all of us believers in Christ called Christians that we all are expected, as watchmen of this generation, to preach as Paul. The other apostles and the early church did so that we may be innocent of the blood of all men. We must go and tell sinners to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord is counting on you and me. Don’t shy away from this responsibility- preach the gospel and the Lord will back us and bless us. Don’t sit on the fence, preach the gospel.

LA RESPONSABILITE DE LA SENTINELLE

« Et toi, fils de l’homme, je t’ai établi comme sentinelle sur la maison d’Israël. Tu dois écouter la parole qui sort de ma bouche, et les avertir de ma part. Quand je dis au méchant: Méchant, tu mourras! Si tu ne parles pas pour détourner le méchant de sa voie, ce méchant mourra dans son iniquité, et je te redemanderai son sang. Mais si tu avertis le méchant pour le détourner de sa voie, et qu’il ne s’en détourne pas, il mourra dans son iniquité, et toi tu sauveras ton âme» (EZEK. 33:7-9) (LSV).
Dans les temps anciens, les gens avaient l’habitude d’avoir des sentinelles (gardiens) qui seraient de garde pour leur ville en cas de n’importe quelle attaque ou invasion possible. C’était la responsabilité de la sentinelle chaque fois qu’il voyait une attaque en cours de sonner la trompette ou de siffler pour alerter les villageois du danger. S’il se tait, après qu’il ait aperçu un danger de loin sans rien faire pour avertir les gens et que les ennemis arrivaient à les capturer, la sentinelle serait coupable de leur sang. Mais si après les avoir avertis, ils ne se réveillent pas pour se défendre et qu’ils sont capturés, leur sang retombera sur eux-mêmes mais elle (la sentinelle) aurait sauvé son âme à elle. C’était là la métaphore que Dieu utilisa pour parler à Ezékiel dans les versets précédents du chapitre. Ceci dit, Dieu se tourna vers Ezékiel et lui dit qu’il (Dieu) a fait d’Ezékiel une sentinelle pour Israël et que s’il dit au méchant qu’il mourra, c’était la responsabilité d’Ezékiel de dire au méchant que ce que Dieu a dit lui arrivera s’il ne se détourne pas de sa voie, son sang retombera sur lui-même mais Ezékiel sauvera son âme à lui. Mais si Ezékiel n’avait pas assumé sa responsabilité d’avertir le méchant et que celui-ci arrivait à mourir, Dieu jugerait Ezékiel pour son omission.
Tous les chrétiens à la fois de sexe masculin et féminin, jeunes comme adultes sont les Ezékiel de cette génération pour avertir les pécheurs du danger du jugement de Dieu en cours sur les pécheurs impénitents de notre époque. Nous avons été sauvés pour sauver les autres.
Chaque pécheur devant Dieu est une personne méchante sans distinction de statut social. Dieu ne fait point acception de quiconque reste dans ses péchés et manque de s’en détourner. Dans Psaumes 9:17, la parole de Dieu dit : « Les méchants se tournent vers le séjour des morts, toutes les nations qui oublient Dieu» Etant donné que nous savons tous cette vérité que sans Christ, tout homme est perdu, nous, en tant que sentinelles (gardiens et gardiennes) de Dieu, ne pouvons pas nous permettre de répugner à notre responsabilité de dire aux pécheurs la voie du salut par l’évangile qui est la puissance de Dieu à sauver. Paul était bien informé des implications de manquer de prêcher l’évangile et dit : «…et malheur à moi si je n’annonce pas l’Évangile!» (1Co. 9:16). Paul prêcha l’évangile à tel point qu’il affirma: « servant le Seigneur en toute humilité, avec larmes, et au milieu des épreuves que me suscitaient les embûches des Juifs. C’est pourquoi je vous déclare aujourd’hui que je suis pur du sang de vous tous» (Actes 20:19,26).
Qu’il soit bien su de tous les croyants en Christ appelés Chrétiens qu’il est espéré de nous que nous prêchions tous, en tant que sentinelles de cette génération, à l’instar de Paul. Les autres disciples et l’Eglise primitive en avaient fait autant afin que nous soyons innocents du sang de tous les hommes. Nous devons aller dire à tous les pécheurs de croire au Seigneur Jésus-Christ. Le Seigneur compte sur toi et moi. Ne répugne pas à cette responsabilité – prêche l’évangile et le Seigneur te soutiendra et te bénira. Ne reste pas neutre. Prêche toi aussi l’évangile.
