THE FAITH OF A CENTURION
“Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. “For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!…. Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour” (Matt 8:5-10,13).
The Bible is the word of God and is full of promises and instructions that benefit and meet the needs of humans. It is like a well, but faith is the bucket which you need to draw from it. Without faith, you cannot benefit from it no matter how many times you read your Bible, or how fervent you are in prayer. It is just impossible to please God without faith.
The story of the Centurion in this Scripture is a good lesson for anyone who wants to receive something from God. Strange enough is the person of this centurion. He was not a Jew; he was a roman military Officer having under his authority one hundred soldiers. He had a serious case concerning one of his servants, who was seriously sick and at the point of death. As a military officer, he must have had specialist physicians available to him as his position in the military could offer him; but he went to Jesus and begged Him to heal his dying servant, Jesus was also willing to oblige: “I will come and heal him, He said.
The centurion was aware of the jewish culture that he, as a roman centurion, no jewish Rabbi would dare enter his house because he was a Gentile, and by his career; a sinner. He humbly told Jesus: “I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. This surprised Jesus that such a roman military officer could demonstrate such faith, which Jesus Himself called ‘great faith’, not even in Israel (the real people of God).
As a result of his great faith, Jesus told him to go home, ‘as you have believed so let it be done for you” and his servant was healed that same hour (verse 13). As I often say, faith is not seeing is believing, there is no faith in believing what you already see, faith is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen”.
It is taking God at His word. Like what Jesus said in this story, there are many people in the church who lack the kind of faith which this centurion demonstrated. While church members are waiting for the Pastor or evangelist to come and lay his hand on them for healing or a certain miracle, a visitor may come and tell the man of God to just say: a word into his/her life and he/she shall be alright and it will be done because he/she believes.
No human being has ever seen God face to face, even the faith heroes mentioned in Hebrews 11, did not see God physically but they believed what He spoke to them either directly or indirectly and that was all. When King Jehoshaphat and Judah were confronted by allied armies of three countries, he led the Jews to fast and pray to God, and in the process, God spoke through someone and immediately, Jehoshaphat believed and encouraged the Jews to “Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall have success! Believe his prophets, and everything will be all right” (II Chro 20:20b TLB).
That was all; instead of going to pray after the Lord had spoken through His prophet, the next thing they did was praising the Lord in songs for He is good and His mercy endures forever. So the battle was worn in their favour without shooting one stone. God said He would fight the battle, they believed, He fought it, and God’s people carried the wealth of their opponents for three good days and rejoiced. The bottom line is that: Have faith in God, His word and His faithful servants and it shall be well with you. You can increase your faith today by strongly believing what God’s word says and by acting accordingly.

« Comme Jésus entrait dans Capernaüm, un centenier l’aborda, le priant et disant: Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché à la maison, atteint de paralysie et souffrant beaucoup. Jésus lui dit: J’irai, et je le guérirai. Le centenier répondit: Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit; mais dis seulement un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri. Car, moi qui suis soumis à des supérieurs, j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres; et je dis à l’un: Va! Et il va; à l’autre: Viens! et il vient; et à mon serviteur: Fais cela! Et il le fait. Après l’avoir entendu, Jésus fut dans l’étonnement, et il dit à ceux qui le suivaient: Je vous le dis en vérité, même en Israël je n’ai pas trouvé une aussi grande foi. Puis Jésus dit au centenier: Va, qu’il te soit fait selon ta foi. Et à l’heure même le serviteur fut guéri» (Matthieu 8:5-10,13) (LSV).
La Bible est la parole de Dieu et pleine de promesses et d’instructions utiles qui remplissent les besoins des humains. C’est comme un puits mais la foi est comme un seau dont tu as besoin pour y puiser. Sans la foi, tu ne peux pas tirer avantage d’elle quel que soit le nombre de fois que tu passes à lire la Bible ou combien fervent tu es en prière. C’est tout juste impossible de plaire à Dieu sans la foi.
L’histoire du centenier dans ce passage est une bonne leçon pour quiconque désire recevoir quelque chose de Dieu. Assez étrange est la personne de ce centenier. Il n’était pas Juif mais officier militaire romain ayant sous son autorité une centaine de soldats. Il avait un cas sérieux concernant un de ses serviteurs qui était gravement malade et sur le point de mourir. En tant qu’officier militaire, il aurait dû avoir des médecins spécialistes à sa disposition comme sa position dans l’armée pouvait lui octroyer mais il vint à Jésus pour le supplier de guérir son serviteur moribond. Jésus se sentit aussi obligé de s’exécuter : « J’irai, et je le guérirai» Le centenier avait conscience de la culture juive qu’en tant que centenier romain de profession, aucun maître juif n’oserait entrer chez lui car il était païen, pécheur. Il dit humblement à Jésus : «Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit; mais dis seulement un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri » Cela surprit Jésus qu’un tel officier romain puisse démontrer une foi pareille que Jésus traita ‘de grande foi’ pas même en Israël (le véritable peuple de Dieu).
Par suite de cette grande foi, Jésus lui dit de rentrer chez lui et « qu’il lui soit fait selon sa foi » et son serviteur fut guéri à l’heure même. (v. 13). Comme nous le disons souvent, la foi ce n’est pas voir puis croire car il n’existe pas de foi dans la croyance en ce que tu as déjà vu. La foi est l’assurance ferme que ce que nous désirons aura bel et bien lieu. C’est prendre Dieu au mot. Comme ce que dit Jésus dans cette histoire, il y a beaucoup de gens dans l’église qui manquent le genre de foi tel que démontré par le centenier. Pendant que les membres de l’église attendent que le pasteur ou l’évangéliste vienne leur imposer les mains pour la guérison ou un miracle quelconque, un visiteur pourrait venir dire à l’homme de Dieu de dire seulement un mot dans sa vie et il/elle serait en bon état en raison de sa croyance.
Aucun être humain n’a jamais vu Dieu face à face, même les héros de la foi comme mentionnés dans Hébreux chapitre 11 n’ont pas vu Dieu physiquement mais ils crurent à ce qu’il leur dit soit directement ou indirectement et c’était tout. Quand le roi Josaphat et Juda étaient affrontés par les armées alliées de trois nations, il conduit les Juifs à jeuner et à prier à Dieu et dans le processus, Dieu parla à travers quelqu’un et immédiatement, Josaphat crut et encouragea les Juifs à croire : « Confiez-vous en l’Éternel, votre Dieu, et vous serez affermis; confiez-vous en ses prophètes, et vous réussirez» (2Chro. 20:20b).C’était tout. Au lieu d’aller prier après que l’Eternel ait parlé par son prophète, la chose suivante qu’ils firent était de louer l’Eternel à travers des chansons car il est bon, car sa miséricorde dure à toujours. Le combat fut donc gagné à leur faveur sans même lancer la moindre pierre. Dieu dit qu’il combattrait et ils crurent. Il combattit et le peuple de Dieu s’empara des richesses de leurs ennemis pendant trois bons jours et ils s’en réjouissaient. En définitive, aie foi en Dieu, en sa parole et en ses serviteurs et tu prospéreras. Tu peux accroître ta foi aujourd’hui en croyant fermement à ce que dit la parole de Dieu et en agissant en conséquence.
