SO WHEN YOU COME TO YOUR MARAH!

“So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them (Exd.15:22-25).
The children of Israel had seen the wonderful works of God which He did in Egypt so that Pharaoh should release them and let them go. They had left Egypt with joy and with many costly materials they got from the Egyptians. In fact the Bible says, “Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of God and clothing. And the LORD had given the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.”
(Exd.12:35,36). Whatever the children of Israel asked the Egyptians they got it because God gave them favour and it was the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham that by the time the children of Israel would leave the land of their captivity they would leave with great possessions. “And also the nation whom they serve I will judge, afterward they shall come with great possessions”. (Gen.15:14).
It appeared that everything then was in their favour as if that was not enough, they witnessed the parting of the Red Sea (an incredible miracle) by which they passed just like a super highway without any problem, when the Egyptians attempted to do likewise, they all sank in the sea and they all perished. With the aforementioned events, they really enjoyed what we could call divine favour.
But just few months later in that journey, they got to a place called Marah and were thirsty. Waters were in that place but the waters were bitter, nobody could drink it, then they started to complain against God and Moses. They had forgotten all they enjoyed when the LORD brought them out of Egypt. Moses called to God and God instructed him that he should cut a tree nearby which he cut and threw into the waters immediately the bitter water became sweet and they all drank it. The experience of our Christian journey has some similarities to the experience of the children of Israel in their journey to the Promised Land. When we got saved, we were happy with our new life in Christ and started enjoying the favour we did not deserve. But later in our journey, we come to our Marah sometimes when things become difficult, and like the children of Israel we complain bitterly against God, or the pastor.
As God tested the children of Israel at Marah to know if indeed they trusted Him with all He had done for them; so also in our Christian journey, a time of test would come to know if we actually trust the LORD. Unfortunately at such a time, several Christians even did worse than the children of Israel. When you come to your Marah (your place of testing) instead of complaining, all you need to do is trust in the faithfulness and in ever-caring love of God, and do like Moses who called on God to solve the problem and the LORD did. The experience of our journey could also be likened to that of someone eating sugarcane, as he starts biting it, it is sweet but in the process he comes to the hard part of it. If he wants to continue to enjoy it, all he needs to do is bite it hard, break it and the next part of it is sugar.
As a Christian, you may be passing through a bitter experience now which you never thought would happen to you, don’t give up! A quitter never wins, the winner never quits. So call on the Lord in your prayers of faith in the name of Jesus I promise you, your God will turn your bitterness to sweetness and people will celebrate you.
So whenever you come to your Marah, don’t complain, don’t give up, just pray and trust God for His intervention and you will see what the Lord will do.

LORSQUE TU ARRIVES A TON MARA

« Moïse fit partir Israël de la mer Rouge. Ils prirent la direction du désert de Schur; et, après trois journées de marche dans le désert, ils ne trouvèrent point d’eau. Ils arrivèrent à Mara; mais ils ne purent pas boire l’eau de Mara parce qu’elle était amère. C’est pourquoi ce lieu fut appelé Mara. Le peuple murmura contre Moïse, en disant: Que boirons-nous? Moïse cria à l’Éternel; et l’Éternel lui indiqua un bois, qu’il jeta dans l’eau. Et l’eau devint douce. Ce fut là que l’Éternel donna au peuple des lois et des ordonnances, et ce fut là qu’il le mit à l’épreuve» (Ex 15:22-25) (LSV).
Les enfants d’Israël virent les œuvres miraculeuses de Dieu qu’il fit en Egypte afin que Pharaon puisse les libérer et les laisser aller. Ils avaient quitté l’Egypte avec joie et avec beaucoup d’articles dispendieux qu’ils reçurent des Egyptiens. En fait, la Bible dit : « Les enfants d’Israël firent ce que Moïse avait dit, et ils demandèrent aux Égyptiens des vases d’argent, des vases d’or et des vêtements. L’Éternel fit trouver grâce au peuple aux yeux des Égyptiens, qui se rendirent à leur demande. Et ils dépouillèrent les Égyptiens» (Ex. 12:35-36). Les enfants d’Israël reçurent des Egyptiens tout ce qu’ils leur demandèrent car Dieu leur accorda la faveur et c’était l’accomplissement de la promesse de Dieu à Abraham qu’au moment où ils sortiraient du pays de leur captivité, ils sortiraient avec de grandes richesses : « Mais je jugerai la nation à laquelle ils seront asservis, et ils sortiront ensuite avec de grandes richesses» (Ge. 15:14).
Il semblait que tout était en leur faveur à cette époque-là comme si cela n’était pas assez, ils firent l’expérience de la division de la Mer Rouge (miracle incroyable) par laquelle ils passèrent juste comme une voie express sans encombre. Quand les Egyptiens tentèrent de faire de même, ils furent tous engloutis dans la mer et y périrent tous. Avec les événements susmentionnés, ils jouirent vraiment de ce qu’on pouvait appeler la faveur divine. Mais peu de mois après dans leur voyage, ils arrivèrent à un lieu appelé Mara et eurent soif. Il y avait de l’eau dans ce lieu mais celle-ci était amère et personne ne pouvait en boire. Ils se mirent à se plaindre à Dieu et a Moïse. Ils oublièrent tout ce dont ils avaient joui quand l’Eternel les fit sortir d’Egypte. Moïse invoqua Dieu et Dieu lui ordonna de couper un bois d’à côté qu’il coupa et jeta dans l’eau qui devint immédiatement douce et ils en burent tous. L’expérience de notre voyage chrétien présente des similarités avec l’expérience des enfants d’Israël dans leur voyage vers la Terre Promise. Quand nous fûmes sauvés, nous étions ravis de notre vie nouvelle en Christ et nous mirent à jouir de la faveur que nous n’avions pas méritée. Mais plus tard au cours de notre voyage, nous arrivons souvent à Mara quand les choses deviennent dures et à l’instar des enfants d’Israël, nous nous plaignons amèrement à Dieu ou au pasteur.
Comme Dieu avait éprouvé les enfants d’Israël à Mara pour savoir s’ils lui faisaient vraiment confiance avec tout ce qu’il fit pour eux, de même au cours de notre voyage chrétien, un temps d’épreuve viendrait pour savoir si nous faisons réellement confiance en l’Eternel. Malheureusement à un tel moment, plusieurs chrétiens firent même pire que les enfants d’Israël. Lorsque tu arrives à ton Mara (ton lieu d’épreuve) au lieu de te plaindre, tout ce que tu as à faire est de faire confiance à la fidélité et à l’amour de plus en plus tendre de Dieu et de faire à l’instar de Moïse qui invoqua Dieu pour résoudre le problème et l’Eternel intervint. L’expérience de notre voyage pourrait être aussi comparée à celle de quelqu’un qui mange (et suce) de la canne à sucre; quand il se met à la mordre, elle est douce mais dans le processus, il parvient à la partie dure. Et s’il désire continuer à en jouir, tout ce qu’il a besoin de faire est de la mordre fort, de la briser et la partie qui s’ensuit n’est que du sucre.
En tant que chrétien, tu serais peut-être maintenant en train de traverser une expérience amère à laquelle tu n’as jamais songé. Ne te décourage pas! Celui qui baisse les bras ne gagne jamais et le gagnant ne baisse jamais les bras. Invoque donc l’Eternel dans tes prières de la foi et je te promets au nom de Jésus, que ton Dieu changera ton amertume en douceur et les gens te célébreront.
