Obey Your Rulers
God ordained the state as an institution to pilot the affairs of the citizens. God commands Christians to obey the rulers (v. 1). The governments are put in place because we need certain restraints to prevent disharmony in the society. Paul describes ‘government’ as people put in place to execute its proper function to the smooth running of the state to ensure peace and progress. But when its directives run contrary to the word of God, the latter should be followed. Verse 2, says, whoever refuses to obey the ordinances, rules and regulations of his or her leaders is doing it at the detriment of his or her life. Christians must be law abiding. Therefore, don’t do anything that will bring reproach to God’s name.
Point of Emphasis: Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers (v. 1a)
Prayer Point: The grace to be obedient to higher authorities, give to me Oh Lord in the name of Jesus.
