One Man One Wife

Gen. 2:20-25

The first family which God made consisted of one man and one woman. This is the prototype which God gave to man to follow. In several cultural settings, the society has accommodated polygamy in which a man marries more than one wife. There are some societies also where polyandry is permitted in which a woman can have more than one husband. When Christians want to excuse their desire for more than one wife, they site David as an example. It should be noted that not every action recorded in the Bible is approved by God. God has His standards and does not change them. When man falls short of the standards, he suffers the repercussion of breaking God’s laws. If God wanted a man to marry more than one wife, He would have created more than one woman for Adam. His pattern for us is one man, one wife.

Point of Emphasis: Marrying more than one wife generates serious friction within the family.

Prayer Point: Father, help our men to control the greed that leads them to polygamy.
