THE FAITH OF CALEB AND JOSHUA
“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.” So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel…. Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”… But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ Only do not rebel against the Lord” (Num. 13:1-3;26-28, 33; 14:6-9).
The Lord had promised Abraham that He would settle his descendants in the land He promised them (Abraham and his descendants) to inherit at a set time. When the time came, God destroyed Pharaoh the tyrant and all his army, and the children of Israel got their freedom and started their journey to the Promised Land. When they got to the wilderness of Paran and by the instruction of God, Moses sent twelve men among them, each from the twelve tribes of Israel to see how beautiful and blessed the land was. They came back with both positive and negative reports to the children of Israel. They saw that the land was good and flowed with milk and honey but the challenge there was that they could not confront the inhabitants of the land because they were people of big and dreadful stature- there were giants among them. They went on to say that if a comparison were made they (the children of Israel) were like grasshoppers. But Caleb and Joshua saw the whole thing in a different way. While the other ten spies were looking at the people in the eyes of the natural, Caleb and Joshua saw them in the eyes of faith.
Though they saw the people the same way the other spies saw them but in their own assessment as big as some of the inhabitants were, they were no match to the God who brought them from the land of Egypt, that is undaunted faith. “Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are able to overcome it.” (Num. 13:30). God was angry with the negative report of the ten spies and determined to destroy all Israel and start another race from Moses, but Moses interceded for Israel. Read (Num.14:13-24). Because of the unbelief of the people, only Caleb and Joshua among the twelve spies were among those who entered the Promised Land for their faith in God who does the impossible.
As the children of Israel met challenges on their journey to the land of Canaan, so also we Christians, will meet challenges in our Christian journey to the kingdom of God. But not everyone that started the journey will end up, only those who will by faith trust God in every situation and circumstance will make it to heaven. GOFAMINT had studied the subject of faith some weeks before now, the purpose is to prepare us with any challenge that may confront us in our Christian life. We all know that without faith it is impossible to please Him (God) (Heb.11:6). As a believer, don’t let the intensity of your circumstances or challenges frighten or intimidate you, but rest your faith on your God who does the impossible, believing that your God has never lost any battle and He will fight your battle for you. God does not expect you to face the challenges of life in your own power but in His own might and power. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (II Cor. 10:4).
I therefore advise you to emulate the faith of Caleb and Joshua, use your weapon of warfare – faith, the word of God, the name of Jesus, believing that you are the child of the invincible God, victory is yours and so shall you have victory over your threatening challenges, put your enemies to flight, and possess your possession.

« L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit: Envoie des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan, que je donne aux enfants d’Israël. Tu enverras un homme de chacune des tribus de leurs pères; tous seront des principaux d’entre eux. Moïse les envoya du désert de Paran, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel; tous ces hommes étaient chefs des enfants d’Israël.
A leur arrivée, ils se rendirent auprès de Moïse et d’Aaron, et de toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël, à Kadès dans le désert de Paran. Ils leur firent un rapport, ainsi qu’à toute l’assemblée, et ils leur montrèrent les fruits du pays. Voici ce qu’ils racontèrent à Moïse: Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. A la vérité, c’est un pays où coulent le lait et le miel, et en voici les fruits. Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est puissant, les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avons vu des enfants d’Anak.
Et nous y avons vu les géants, enfants d’Anak, de la race des géants: nous étions à nos yeux et aux leurs comme des sauterelles.
Et, parmi ceux qui avaient exploré le pays, Josué, fils de Nun, et Caleb, fils de Jephunné, déchirèrent leurs vêtements, et parlèrent ainsi à toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël: Le pays que nous avons parcouru, pour l’explorer, est un pays très bon, excellent. Si l’Éternel nous est favorable, il nous mènera dans ce pays, et nous le donnera: c’est un pays où coulent le lait et le miel. Seulement, ne soyez point rebelles contre l’Éternel, et ne craignez point les gens de ce pays, car ils nous serviront de pâture, ils n’ont plus d’ombrage pour les couvrir, l’Éternel est avec nous, ne les craignez point!» (Nom. 13 :1-3 ; 26-28,33;14:6-9) (LSV).
L’Eternel avait promis à Abraham qu’il établirait ses descendants dans le pays qu’il leur (Abraham et ses descendants) a promis d’hériter au temps fixé. Quand le moment arriva, Dieu détruisit Pharaon le tyran et toute son armée. C’est ainsi que les enfants d’Israël obtinrent leur liberté et commencèrent leur voyage vers la Terre Promise. Quand ils arrivaient au désert de Paran et suite à l’instruction de Dieu, Moise envoya douze hommes parmi eux, chacun des douze tribus d’Israël pour voir comment le pays était beau et riche. Ils revinrent aux enfants d’Israël munis de rapports positifs et négatifs. Ils virent que le pays était bon où coulait le lait et le miel mais le défi qui s’y trouvait est qu’ils n’étaient pas en mesure d’affronter les habitants du pays car c’était des gens de sature gigantesque et effrayante. Ils étaient géants parmi eux. Ils ajoutaient que si on devait faire une comparaison par rapport à ces gens, les enfants d’Israël étaient comme des sauterelles. Mais Caleb et Josué virent tout cela différemment. Pendant que les dix autres espions contemplèrent ces gens avec les yeux naturels, Caleb et Josué, eux les regardèrent avec les yeux de foi. Quoiqu’ils virent ces gens de la même façon que les autres espions, néanmoins dans leur évaluation, aussi grands qu’ils soient, ils ne faisaient pas le poids contre le Dieu qui les a faits sortir du pays d’Egypte. C’est là une foi imperturbable. « Caleb fit taire le peuple, qui murmurait contre Moïse. Il dit: Montons, emparons-nous du pays, nous y serons vainqueurs!» (No.13:30). Dieu se mit en colère contre le rapport négatif des dix espions et décida de détruire tout Israël et de reprendre une autre génération à partir de Moïse mais ce dernier intercéda pour Israël. (Lire No.14:13-24). En raison de l’incroyance des gens, seuls Caleb et Josué parmi les douze espions étaient parmi ceux qui entrèrent dans la Terre Promise pour leur foi en Dieu, lui qui fait l’impossible.
Comme les enfants d’Israël firent face à des défis pendant leur voyage au pays de Canaan, de même aussi, nous qui sommes chrétiens, feront face à des défis dans notre voyage chrétien vers le royaume de Dieu. Mais ce ne sont pas tous ceux qui ont commencé le voyage qui arriveront jusqu’au bout. C’est seulement ceux, qui par la foi feront confiance à Dieu dans chaque situation ou circonstance, qui réussiront à hériter les cieux. La MEF Int’l avait étudié le sujet sur la foi quelques semaines auparavant; le but est de nous préparer face à n’importe quel défi auquel nous pourrions être confrontés dans notre vie chrétienne. Nous savons tous que sans la foi, il est impossible de lui (Dieu) plaire. (Héb.11:6). En tant que croyant, ne te laisse pas effrayer ou intimider par l’ampleur de tes circonstances ou de tes défis mais repose ta foi sur Dieu qui fait l’impossible, croyant qu’il n’a jamais perdu de bataille et il combattra pour toi. Dieu ne s’attend pas à ce que tu affrontes les défis dans ta vie de ton propre pouvoir mais de son pouvoir et de sa force à lui. « Car les armes avec lesquelles nous combattons ne sont pas charnelles; mais elles sont puissantes, par la vertu de Dieu, pour renverser des forteresses ». (2Co.10:4).
Nous vous conseillons donc d’imiter la foi de Caleb et de Josué. Fais usage de tes armes de combat – la foi, la parole de Dieu, le nom de Jésus en croyant que tu es le fils du Dieu invincible. La victoire t’appartient et c’est ainsi que tu auras la victoire sur tous les défis qui te menacent. Mets tes ennemis en fuite et empare-toi de tes biens.
