THANKSGIVING & THANKSLIVING

(Dan. 6:10, Ps. 92:1-3, Ps.100:4)

Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days” (Dan 6:10).

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night, On an instrument of ten strings, On the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound” (Ps 92:1-3).

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name” (Ps 100:4).

Thanks-giving is observed in America every third Thursday of November in the year, I strongly believe in my mind that thanks are given to someone for that person’s act of benevolence to the beneficiary. The psalmist says it is a good thing to give thanks to God. All human beings owe it a duty to give thanks to God to appreciate Him for what he has done and will continue to do in our lives.

Thanksgiving is an act of opening our mouths and offer thanks to someone who had one time or the other did some good things for us. Children of God should thank the Almighty God for He is good and His mercy endures forever. Thanksgiving to God should be our second nature. As long as you are still living you have every reason to thank God for. You may not have all that you need now but that does not mean that you will not have them at their appropriate time. God’s word teaches us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplications, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Phil. 4:6) It is advisable that we start our everyday prayers with thanks-giving before going into our requests. A Yoruba adage says, “Bomode ba dupe oore ana; a ri omiran gba” meaning- “If a child gives thanks for what he or she received yesterday he or she will get another (gift)”.

When you appreciate someone for what he or she did for you that individual will be happy that you appreciate what he or she did for you. So also, we should be thankful to God not just annually but every time for He is good. No parent will be pleased with an ungrateful child who do not thank the parents but just keep asking for new things everyday. I therefore advise you to be thankful and thanks-living, and so God will richly bless you more and more.
